Finland and Education

http://www.cnnturk.com/yasam/finlandiya-egitim-sisteminin-basari-sirlari

Recently I read a newspaper article about the secrets of success of education in Finland. I had already read some other articles about Finland's Education System and it attract my attention immediately. I think I will look into topic more.

Well I guess most of you don't know Turkish so I will summarize the article for you. In Finland there is a big diversity in classrooms, and child of ministers and labor workers can be in the same class. There are 3500 schools and only 27 of them are private(most are religious schools or international schools). You can see plates balls and coaches beside desks in the classrooms. Children walk in their socks. Classrooms are seen as homes. There is no strict education, but self pace is important. If the children has special needs- physical handicaps or learning difficulties- according to laws school need to open a class for them. The children go to nearest school around their house. The key behind education is: no student should be lost. There are no private lessons at home, so if the children has difficulties, or slow in learning teachers focus on them more. And to be a teacher you need to have a master degree as well. Pretty interesting. I wonder if it is applicable it other places.

Share and Embed › CTE 319 — Podbean

When I tried to upload my podcast it didn't work, I think blogger should expand its upload choice varieties, it only support videos but not any audio format. Mine was Waw so we need to change format to Mp3 then use Pod bean to share on blogger.

Click to listen my record

Creating an Audio Record, can be used for creating Pod Casts as well.

Hi, Recently we are learning about creating voice records, you can text any test and after customizing the speaker you can have a record. It is free but you need to pay for the special features as well.

Here I used a text with interview Fazıl Say.

I just made a new Voki. See it here:

There are also other options:
http://www.readthewords.com/work/output/159818_text90013AM.txt.mp3http://www.readthewords.com/work/output/159818_text90013AM.txt.mp3

We created this audio to ask questions, now the next step is answering the question
how we will do that?
1. download the audio on the second link.
2. open http://sourceforge.net/projects/audacity/
3. Download the app and open it.
4. Drag the audio on the app
5. Upload your answers (if your computer doesn't have a microphone, you can use voice recorder on your phone, and send it though mail) to page. if you are using your phone it will not support the format, you need to use a converter, you can  Convert to Mp3 in the given web site.
6.drag your answers (mp3 format) on the app (audacity), and copy the needed answers. (you need to use the tools on the app- copy-paste. Carefull, if you are the the playing mood it will not work)
7. finally you should be getting your answers, to record but guess what? it will not work! you need another app to download them(you are lucky to have me, and I am lucky to have Yunus sitting on the text table, our problem solver): download app to convert your record into mp3.
8. then choose file, and choose export. (you need to choose mp3) so finally it will download it as a mp3.

well you can see my first try above.(It seems Bloger doesn't recognize mp3 as videos, you need to see the next  post)

It was fun, but too much work I hope sb create something actually works easier, without all the mumble-jumble.

Homework

So here is the home work part:

  1. Reflect on vocabulary knowledge and proficiency tests

  1. Your vocabulary knowledge
    1. Compare the results of your vocabulary knowledge from the two tests in today’s session with http://my.vocabularysize.com/ - the classic vocabulary test by Paul Nation.

    2. Do the tests agree with each other?

I think tests were quite different than each other, so this kind of agreement test would be impossible. But I believe I did better in the former tests. Which can be related with:

    • I did trick myself about word knowledge
    • I did mistake word I do not know with the ones I do.
    • I do not have a cognition of the vocab size.
    • Tests were not very successful to determine word knowledge.
  1. Your general knowledge of English
    1. Take this new test of English at https://testcenter.duolingo.com/  Do the free test as seriously and conscrientiously as possible.
    • I found this test very confusing, hearing the sentences, finding the words between non exist ones and fill in the blanks part. I found the last part extremely challenging, as it was my least favorite exercise in high school as well.
    • I get 58% Advanced in English.According to test I can fulfill most communication goals, even in unfamiliar topics. Can understand both concrete and abstract writing, and interract with native speakers pretty painlessly.
    • I found this result pretty accurate. But I did not understand the logic behind the test at all. I wish the test included a better feedback. I guess the paid version provides better explanations for the test.

An Overlook On Some Word Knowledge/Vocabulary Tests

Recently we get some tests about size of our vocabulary. First two tests were mostly based on trust ability of ones own knowledge. So basically you were supposed to say yes or no for the words brought. First one was more tiring, seeing all the words at once. The frequency of the words also changed depend on its place on the que, and it was alphabetical. So words start with later letters like r, w, z are less frequent. So I did not find this test very reliable.

Second test was on the other hand easier to do. You were supposed to click F or J based or your answer(yes I know the meaning/ no I do not know the meaning. The words were random, and they were least frequent. I especially like the part about non-words. I think the reason behind it is decreasing the " say yes to everything" responses. But I prefer those non-words were more like possible but not existing word choices. For instance some non existing words were made by using a letter wrongly (like: instead of black, writing bleck) I wonder if it is an efficient way of checking vocabulary size. Those can be easily confused by non native speakers of English.

Both tests were encouraging learners to increase their vocabulary size. But if you like to take tests again you are getting the same questions, I prefer the computer chooses random words form dictionaries based on frequency of words in the same amount for that frequency level. Also I find seeing very weird words very fun. And there is an option of going back and seeing which words you guessed right and which ones you guessed wrong. Your approximate knowledge of the words, and approximate knowledge of native speaker. But it was impossible to see all the words you think you know or you said you did not know.

If you like to take the tests I recommend you to visit these addresses:
http://testyourvocab.com/

http://vocabulary.ugent.be/

I also asked my friends to do the tests, I should say they had fun while doing. So it would be safe to say that you do not need to be majoring in language arts to enjoy these tests. I think the 3rd test was my least favorite one. And it is not very applicable for learners for all levels. But if you have a good level of English it can be better, because you need to choose the meaning most suitable, so you can not trick the test.

On the other hand it was impossible to see your mistakes and results were not very good to see your current level. If you like to have a look on the test here it is:

http://my.vocabularysize.com/

I do not remember results from other tests but according to this test I know 8000 word families. (word family, a word and its derivatives of it). So I have enough vocabulary to read.

The web site also offer some information for us to have an understanding of language, so here is the notes for me:
What do my results mean?
In general, there is no minimum vocabulary size. Language ability is related to vocabulary size, so the more words you know, the more you will be able to understand. However, if you want to set a learning goal, Paul Nation's (2006) research suggests that the following sizes might be useful:

How large a vocabulary is needed for reading and listening?
Skill Size estimate Notes
Reading 8,000 - 9,000 word families Nation (2006)
Listening 6,000 - 7,000 word families Nation (2006)
Native speaker 20,000 word families Goulden, Nation, & Read (1990) Zechmeister, Chronis, Cull, D’Anna, & Healy (1995)

I also like the website because it recommends further readings. But I wish the results were more clear. Reading what? (literal contexts, journals...) Listening what level, what corpus?  These were not clear from the test.
